About Alta

Return to Alta main page
Another view of the Alta boardinghouse is shown on the top right, below. The photo to the left shows two extant miner cabins, with their original roofs. The bottom photos show a relatively new mill located several miles from Alta. The left photo shows the mines serviced by this mill, connected via tram, on the distant mountainside (click on the image to enlarge). According to Robert L. Brown, author of Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns, Alta once had three mills, the last of which burned in 1945 while seven men were underground. The superintendent had the portal dynamited, stopping the draft that was feeding the fire but killing all seven men. One of the men was the superintendent's son. He had given the order to dynamite knowing his son would die.
