About Animas Forks

Return to Animas Forks main page
Activity at the site began around 1875 and continued at a frenzied pace until its busy Gold Prince Mill was moved to Eureka in 1903. Animas Forks saw its heydey in the 1870's and 1880's, but the town was finally deserted by 1923. High but protected in a deep canyon, many of the buildings still remain. It is certainly the best stop along the Alpine Loop, which many people take every summer in their four-wheel drives from Lake City to Ouray and Silverton, crossing Engineer Pass. In the photo of Animas Forks below you can see the tiny Walsh house in the bottom middle on the other side of the street.
