About Shavano

Return to Shavano main page
Shavano was a famous Ute Indian chief. The right photograph below shows the view of the empty but vast Shavano townsite from the main window of the cabin shown in the opening photo. The bottom photo shows the striking view to the south from of the Shavano townsite. The left photo shows Shavano's south peak from an abandoned mining site below the Shavano Angel. Mt. Shavano and her south peak are majestic wonders, still filled with gold, silver and lead, waiting for a time when it might again become economical to mine these metals. The opening photo showing the Shavano Angel shows both peaks, the Shavano Angel between the two peaks (the valley is her body, with wings outspread, reaching toward the two peaks). Shavano's south peak, at 13,630 feet, is the one on the left.
