About Telluride

Return to Telluride main page
Telluride, like Crested Butte, is an active tourist and ski town that is tucked away in the mountains in such a way that it is (and always will be) somewhat difficult to get to. Telluride and Crested Butte each have a highway that leads into town, but ends there. The top left photo below is taken from the shoulder of the road leading into Telluride, while the top right photo is taken from the hydro-electric plant shown in the opening photo. The bottom right photo is taken from the road leading down from the Tomboy Mine; if you look closely you can see the white hydro-electric plant (click on the image to enlarge).
The hydro-electic plant shown in the opening photo was built in 1904 to supply power to the Smuggler-Union Mine, the upper terminal of the tram for which is shown in the opening photo for the Tomboy Mine. The water falls that drove the hydro-electric plant are called Bridal Veil Falls. A "mini" aerial tramway brought up operators and supplies to the hydro-electric plant. The plant was closed in 1953. One of the cables from the tramway remains, and is shown in the bottom left photo, below.
